NTSB Safety Study
of
STEAM vs. GLASS

NTSB SAFETY STUDY:
Introduction of Glass Cockpit Avionics
into Light Aircraft

...indicates that glass cockpits are no safer than traditional instrument panels -- and perhaps more dangerous for infrequent pilots. Provides new data, and cites many similar findings from studies by private, government and military researchers:
NTSB Conclusion #1:
"Study analyses of aircraft
accident and activity data showed
a decrease in TOTAL accident rates
-- BUT --
an increase in FATAL accident rates
for the selected group
of glass cockpit aircraft
when compared to similar conventionally equipped aircraft

during the study period.
Overall, study analyses did NOT show a significant improvement in safety for the glass cockpit study group."

AOPA Air Safety Foundation report, 2005
on TAA -- "Technologically Advanced Aircraft" (planes with glass cockpits and "simplified" controls):

"Comparing TAA to non-TAA aircraft we have no data at this point to either support or refute the claim that TAA are inherently safer."

NOTE: This issue is hardly new. The safety issues of glass cockpits and similar instrumentation were the subject of a Congressional inquiry as far back as 1988, when the problem began appearing in commercial and military aircraft:

See:

"The 'Glass Cockpit' Syndrome:
How high technology and information overloads
contribute to fatal mistakes."

(news report on Congressional hearing
and expert testimony)
The Washington Post. 10/11/1988;
Health Section, p. Z7ff.

"The increasing use of sophisticated automation is threatening to overwhelm airline pilots, naval crews and others who deal with high technology in stressful situations, a panel of psychologists testified last week before the House Committee on the Armed Forces.

"Psychologists call it the "glass cockpit" syndrome-referring to the ubiquitous glass computer screens. It is a situation where the combination of a flood of technical information, faulty communication among crew members and outside stress lead to major judgment errors that can cause accidents."
